This documentary special project celebrates the remarkable artisans who continue to practice traditional Kazakh crafts, from felt-making and carpet weaving to jewelry crafting and leatherwork. Over eight months, our team traveled across Kazakhstan to document these living treasures and the challenges they face in preserving their ancient skills. The project features intimate portraits of master craftspeople, some of whom are the last practitioners of their particular art form. We document their techniques, learn about the cultural significance of their work, and explore innovative approaches to teaching these skills to younger generations. The documentary includes rare footage of traditional techniques that have been passed down through families for centuries. Our investigation reveals both the challenges and opportunities facing traditional crafts in modern Kazakhstan. While globalization and urbanization threaten some practices, we also discover inspiring examples of young artisans who are finding new markets for traditional products and innovative ways to blend ancient techniques with contemporary design. The project includes collaborations with cultural institutions, craft cooperatives, and educational programs working to preserve these traditions. We examine successful models from other countries and explore how digital platforms are helping Kazakh artisans reach global markets while maintaining the authenticity of their work. This multimedia documentary combines stunning visual documentation of craft techniques with thoughtful analysis of cultural preservation challenges. The project includes an interactive online exhibition, educational materials for schools, and a traveling physical exhibition that has been displayed in museums across Kazakhstan.
